A baby born with cleft lip and palate in Nigeria has received a life-transforming medical intervention—completely free of charge—thanks to a collaboration between Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) and the Happy Child Foundation (HCF).
The infant, Ugochi Oluchukwu, has become the first beneficiary of this new partnership focused on providing free cleft lip and palate surgery for children across Nigeria.
Led by Dr. Moses Adetayo from the Dentistry Department at BUTH, the successful surgery marks the beginning of a wider outreach program. The Happy Child Foundation has announced plans to sponsor more children born with cleft conditions, helping them access quality healthcare and live without stigma.

🎯 A Mission-Driven Partnership
Speaking on the initiative, Prof. John Sotunsa, Director of Clinical Services at BUTH, emphasized the hospital’s vision to make healthcare accessible to all—especially underserved children with correctable birth defects.
“As a mission-driven health institution, BUTH actively partners with foundations like HCF to give hope to truly indigent patients,” he said. “This is why we are proud to support children born with cleft lip and palate in Nigeria.”
⏱ Quick & Successful Surgery Brings Hope
Dr. Adetayo shared that the cleft surgery only took 45 minutes, thanks to the coordinated support from ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialists and other medical experts who prepared Ugochi for the procedure.
“Many people are born with cleft lip and palate (CLP), but few get access to treatment. This surgery is not just a correction—it’s a new beginning,” Dr. Adetayo said.
He also explained that while there is no single known cause of cleft conditions, factors such as medications during pregnancy, infections, and trauma may contribute.
đź’– Giving Children a Chance to Thrive
Chigozie Azunna, a representative of the Happy Child Foundation, reiterated the foundation’s commitment to helping every child thrive, regardless of their background.
“We believe every child deserves a chance to smile, to live a fulfilled life, and to reach their full potential. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with BUTH,” Azunna said.
🙏 A Mother’s Gratitude from Abia State
For Mrs. Nkiru Oluchi, Ugochi’s mother who traveled from Abia State to seek help, the surgery was a miracle.

“I can’t thank the doctors and the Happy Child Foundation enough. May God continue to bless them for this great gesture,” she said with joy.
âś… Why This Matters
Over 1 in 700 babies are born with a cleft lip or palate globally, yet in many parts of Nigeria, children suffer due to a lack of awareness or financial support. Thanks to efforts like this from Babcock University Teaching Hospital and Happy Child Foundation, affordable or free cleft surgeries are now within reach for families who need them the most.
